Wilson Ives, Walker Quinn Break Into CMS Top 10 in Final SCIAC Tune-Ups

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Junior Wilson Ives ran a 3:54.05 in the 1500 to move into 10th place in Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field history and junior Walker Quinn had a pole vault of 15 feet, 5.75 inches to move into seventh, to highlight the Stags performance at the Bryan Clay Invitational and the Beach Invitational, respectively.

Both events featured thousands of athletes, including many from top Division I institutions, as the Stags had their final tune-up before SCIAC Championships against a highly-competitive field.

On Friday, Ives finished in 36th place out of 153 runners in the 1500 with his 3:54.05, which is the fastest 1500 for a CMS runner in the three years since Josh Sealand set the school record with a 3:47.34 in 2016. Senior Ben Iten also competed in the 1500 and finished with a 3:55.14, placing him 58th, while sophomore Daniel Sealand was right behind with a 3:55.24 in 60th place.

At Saturday's Beach Invitational, hosted by Long Beach State, Quinn set a new personal best with his pole vault of 15'5.75" which puts him in seventh in school history. Michael Wagenveld set the school record in 2016 with a vault of 16'5", making him the only Stag to eclipse Quinn's mark since 2000.

On Thursday night's opening day of the Bryan Clay Invitational, freshman Miles Christensen ran a 14:28.64 in the 5000 to come in sixth place in his heat (out of 24), with the runners in front of him representing Division I schools Morehead State, Texas A&M and Santa Clara (as well as two unattached).

Sophomore Evan Hassman came in 59th in the steeplechase for the Stags on Thursday out of a 112-runner field with a 9:25.46, while sophomore Will Kimball was 66th with a 9:34.34.

Saturday's Beach Invitational also saw freshman Jamie Cockburn set a personal best in the 200 meters with a 22.22, placing him 43rd out of 85. Sophomore Alex McDonald was 24th in the 400-meter hurdles with a 54.87.

CMS will be back in action when it returns home next week to host the 2019 SCIAC Championships at the Burns Track Complex on Saturday and Sunday.
