CMS Men's Track and Field Sweeps Final Multi-Dual of the Season

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team swept all four opponents in its final SCIAC Multi-Dual of the season on Saturday, defeating Cal Lutheran, Chapman, Pomona-Pitzer and host Occidental.

The dual score with Occidental was the closest, but the Stags prevailed 95-68 to finish with a 7-1 record in their three multi-duals this season. The other finals on Saturday were 120-43 over Pomona-Pitzer, 138-19 over Chapman and 134-27 over Cal Lutheran. 

CMS swept the distance events, with junior Wilson Ives taking first in the 1500 with a 3:54.58, just missing cracking the all-time top 10 in CMS history by .13. Freshman Thomas Fleming was first in the 5000 with a 15:28.93, and sophomore Evan Hassman led a 1-2-3 finish in the steeplechase with a 9:34.02, followed by sophomore Will Kimball and freshman Adam Wilkinson.

The relays also both went to the Stags, with senior Matthew Guillory, sophomore Carter Henderson, freshman Jamie Cockburn and senior Corbin Bethurem winning the 4x100 in 41.65 seconds, which places them in fifth place in CMS history. It marks the fastest 4x100 relay run by a Stag team in 16 years, since Sullivan-Fletcher-Scott-Marenin clocked a 41.62 in 2003 to place fourth in program history. Bethurem was a part of the relay team that previously held the No. 5 spot, a 41.72 in 2016, his freshman year. 

The 4x400 relay also took first, with sophomore Alex McDonald, sophomore Daniel Addison, freshman Keizo Morgan and Cockburn finishing in 3:21.45 to win by just 28 hundredths of a second over Occidental. 

Junior Reese Peterson, who has twice been named the SCIAC Field Athlete of the Week, earned first place in the shot put with a top throw of 46 feet, 6.25 inches, while finishing second in the discus behind teammate Matthew Sill, who had a throw of 140 feet, five inches. Sill and Peterson went 2-3 in the hammer throw, and the Stags were 1-2-3 in the javelin, led by 173 feet, six inches from junior Maxwell Knowles. 

In the sprints, Bethurem was second in the 100 with a 10.90, while Cockburn was second in both the 200 (22.36) and the 400 (49.35). Sophomore Daniel Sealand, meanwhile, was second in the 800 with a 1:55.69. In the jumps, senior Eric Myers was second in the long jump at 20 feet, 10 inches, while junior Tse Yang Lim was second in the triple jump at 43 feet, six inches. 

CMS will be back in action next week in its final tune-up before the SCIAC Championships, with some athletes attending the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific and others attending the Long Beach State Invitational.
