CMS Men's Track and Field Goes 2-0 at Second SCIAC Multi-Dual

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team was in action for its second SCIAC Multi-Dual event of the season and came away with a pair of lopsided wins, defeating Whittier 103.5-55.5 and host Caltech 140-15.

With the wins, CMS is now 3-1 in SCIAC dual competition this year, after falling to Redlands and defeating La Verne in its first Multi-Dual event earlier this month. 

Junior Reese Peterson had a big day by finishing in first in three different throwing events by wide margins. He won the hammer with a top distance of 155 feet, one inch, 24 feet further than the second-place finisher. His top shot put distance of 46'5.5" was a six-foot margin of victory, while his discus throw of 133 feet won by a margin of just over 13 feet. 

The Stags made it a throws sweep by finishing 1-4 in the javelin, with sophomore Jordan Venglass winning with a throw of 182 feet, eight inches, edging out junior teammate Maxwell Knowles by exactly two feet and moving into eighth place in program history.

CMS had dominant efforts in two of the distance events, finishing in the 1-5 spots in the 3000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore Evan Hassman took first in 9:30.41, with sophomore Will Kimball (9:37.45) and freshman Adam Wilkinson (9:47.51) also coming in under 10 minutes. 

The 1500 meters, meanwhile, saw freshman Miles Christensen, sophomore Stevie Steinberg, senior Ben Iten and sophomore Daniel Sealand finish 1-4. Christensen came in under the four-minute mark at 3:59.60, while Steinberg (4:01.22) and Iten (4:02.33) were seconds behind. Junior Wilson Ives added a middle-distance win in the 800, finishing in 1:56.71, while sophomore Alex McDonald won the 400 hurdles in 55.69.

CMS won both relay events on the afternoon as well in very close contests. The 4x100 relay team took first for the Stags, as senior Matthew Guillory, sophomore Carter Henderson, freshman Jamie Cockburn and sophomore Henry Sojico finished in 42.62, a tenth of a second ahead of Whittier (42.72) and three-tenths of a second ahead of Cal Lutheran (42.93). 

The 4x400 relay was just as close, as McDonald, freshman Nohl Patterson, freshman Keizo Morgan and Cockburn finished in 3:22.77, winning by just .11 over Cal Lutheran. Cockburn ran a 48.94 anchor split to edge out Cal Lutheran at the finish. 

CMS will be back in action this weekend when it takes part in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational on Saturday.
