Throwers Take First Place for Men's Track and Field at Redlands Invitational

REDLANDS, Calif. - Junior Maxwell Knowles took first place in the javelin and junior Reese Peterson took first place in the discus to highlight the performance of the CMS men's track and field team at the Redlands Invitational on Friday.

Knowles earned his first-place finish by a narrow margin, earning a long throw of 168 feet, nine inches, beating out Armand Harvey of Occidental by just five inches. Sophomore Jordan Venglass came in third for the Stags with a throw of 165 feet, three inches. 

Peterson, meanwhile, was the only competitor in the field to break 40 meters in the discus, finishing with a top throw of 132 feet, five inches (40.37 meters). That was 2'3" further than Matthew Hayashi of Redlands, who came in second. Peterson was also second in the hammer throw, and first among collegiate competitors, with a throw of 154 feet. 

Senior Charlie Harris was second in the 3000 meters, but first among college competitors, finishing in 9:13.38, behind only Musaab Ali of the Qatar National Team. Freshman Jamie Cockburn came in third in the 400 by running the race in sub-50 second time, finishing in 49.74, with sophomore Alex McDonald right behind in fourth place in 49.74. 

Senior Corbin Bethurem had a strong showing in the 100, coming in seventh out of 49 runners with a time of 11.10. Junior Wilson Ives (1:55.46) was fourth in the 800 and freshman Miles Christensen was fifth (1:55.92), with two other Qatar runners finishing 1-2. Senior Ben Iten, junior Max Denning, sophomore Daniel Sealand and sophomore Evan Hassman were 7-10 in the race to give CMS six of the top 10. 

CMS will be back in action next weekend when it travels to San Diego to take part in the Aztec Invitational, hosted by San Diego State.
