Stags Set for SCIAC Championships

2018 SCIAC Track and Field Championships Info

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 20 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s track and field team is set to compete at the 2018 SCIAC Track and Field Championships this weekend at the University of Redlands. Sophomore Thomas D’Anieri (CMC) and freshman Alex McDonald (CMC) look to help lead CMS to their sixth-straight SCIAC Title.

On the Track

D’Anieri has put together a stellar sophomore campaign for the Stags, setting a new CMS record in the 5000 meter run at the Oxy Distance Carnival (Mar. 10). His time of 14:21.04 is the fastest in Division III this year. He heads into the meet as the SCIAC leader in the event by over two seconds. D’Anieri will also compete in the 3000 meter steeplechase where he currently holds the fifth fastest time in Division III. He is second in the SCIAC with a time of 9:06.64 set at the Aztec Open (Mar. 23), which also placed him second all-time in the CMS record books.

McDonald looks to make a statement at his first SCIAC Championships in both the 400 meter hurdles, the 4x100 meter relay, and the 4x400 meter relay. The freshman leads the SCIAC in the 400 meter hurdles after clocking the 13th fastest time in Division III, crossing the finish line in 53.76 at the Bryan Clay Invitational (Apr. 19). The time also placed him in fifth on the all-time list at CMS.

In the 100 meter dash, Corbin Bethurem (CMC) is tied for the second best time in the SCIAC at 10.81 after running at the Redlands Invitational (Mar. 16).

Ben Iten (HMC) will be in action in both the 5000 meter run and the 1500 meter run. In the 5000 meter event, Iten holds the fifth best time in the SCIAC after finishing with a time of 15:04.08 at the Oxy Distance Carnival (Mar. 10). In the 1500 meter run, Iten raced to the sixth best time in the conference at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational (Mar. 24) with a time of 3:57.74.

In the Field

The Stags send two strong pole vaulters into the competition in Michael Wagenveld (CMC) and Walker Quinn (CMC). Wagenveld hit the highest mark in the SCIAC this season, getting up to 4.90m (16’0.75”) at the SCIAC Multi Dual at CMS (Apr. 14) for the ninth best mark in Division III. Quinn won the pole vault title last year and hit the third highest mark in the SCIAC this season at the Long Beach State Invitational (Apr. 20) with a height of 4.60m (15’1”).

In the javelin, Maxwell Knowles (CMC) holds the second spot in the SCIAC after throwing for a distance of 55.07m (180’8”) at the SCIAC Multi Dual at CMS on Apr. 14.

Reese Peterson will represent CMS in the throwing events and holds top-three marks in the shot put, discus, and hammer throw. In the hammer throw, Peterson threw his implement 45.96m (150’9”) for the second spot in the standings. He sits third in both the shot put at 14.03 (46’0.5”) and the discus 41.88m (137’5”).
