Stags Dominate Distance Events
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's track and field team picked up two wins on Saturday after winning two of three duals at the SCIAC Multi Dual meet hosted at CMS. The Stags defeated Pomona-Pitzer 90.0-73.0 and Caltech 155.0-5.0, but fell to Redlands 84.50-78.50. The Stags dominated in distance events. Thomas D'Anieri (CMC) won both the 5000 meter (5:23.79) and the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:37.62). The Stags took three of the top four spots in the 3000 meter steeplechase to earn crucial points against Pomona-Pitzer.
On the Track
As mentioned, D'Anieri had a great day in distance events, winning the 5000 meter run (15:23.79) and the 3000 meter steeplechase (9:37.62). The sophomore ran away with the 5000 meter event, finishing seven seconds ahead of the second-place runner from Pomona-Pitzer. He edged his way into first in the steeplechase by just over a tenth of a second.
Helping CMS earn big points in the 3000 meter steeplechase along with D'Anieri were Evan Hassman (HMC) and Will Kimball (CMC). The two rounded out the top-four, coming in third (9:47.06) and fourth (9:49.28), respectively.
Ben Iten (HMC) and Wilson Ives (HMC) both had strong showings in the 1500 meter, as mentioned, finishing in the top two spots. Iten's time of 3:59.62 earned him a first-place finish with Ives behind him at 4:00.87.
Alongside D'Anieri in the 5000 meter, Stevie Steinberg (HMC) finished fourth (15:38.91) and Charlie Harris (CMC) came in fifth (16:16.67).
In the sprints, Alex McDonald (CMC) won the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 55.72. Earlier in the day, the freshman placed second in the 400 meter dash at 49.99, over a second ahead of the third-place runner from Pomona-Pitzer. Finn Southerland (HMC) grabbed fifth in the 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.74.
In the 110 meter hurdles, Ross Rainaldi (CMC) raced to a second-place finish at 16.34. Dylan McGarvey (CMC) finished close behind in fourth (16.84).
In the Field
Michael Wagenveld (CMC) improved on his best score this season in the pole vault, winning the event and tying the sixth highest mark in NCAA Division III this season at 4.90m. Walker Quinn (CMC) earned a second-place finish with a mark of 4.55m.
In the throwing events, Reese Peterson (HMC) won the discus by over a meter with a throw of 41.88m. He also won the hammer throw, throwing his implement a distance of 45.96m. Michael Sill (CMC) finished behind him in the hammer with a toss of 44.94m. Peterson went on to take second in the shot put at 14.03m. Andrew Maltz (HMC) grabbed a second-place finish in the shot put with 12.45m.
Maxwell Knowles (CMC) took over the 10th spot in the CMS record books with his performance in the javelin throw. He finished second with a mark of 55.07m. Ives, also in action in field events, was fourth in the javelin with a throw of 49.15m.
Eric Myers took second in the long jump, hitting a mark of 6.61m. He finished just behind the first-place finisher who hit a mark of 6.62m.
Davis Catolico (CMC) and Eamon Brady (CMC) both participated in the long jump and the triple jump. Catolico took fifth in the long jump (6.29m) and fourth in the triple jump (13.53m). Brady finished sixth in the long jump (5.91m) and fifth in the triple jump (13.26m).
CMS Track and Field is back in action next weekend and will have competitors at three different meets; The Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific, the Long Beach State Invitational, and the Mt. SAC Relays.
