SCIAC Multi-Dual victory secure men and women SCIAC lead

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The third SCIAC Multi-Dual proved to be the charm for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field program this past Saturday as both the men and women's team took first place to sit on top of the SCIAC standings. This victory marked the third straight undefeated dual meet season for the Athenas. Facing University of Redlands, Cal Lutheran, and host Occidental College, the Stags and Athenas were focused on winning head-to-head than earning the best time/distance in their events.

Sophomore Jacque Desmond (SC) was spectacular on the pole vault, breaking the CMS All-Time record for the third time this year with a mark of 3.81 meters (12-06). Her record remains second in the SCIAC All-Time record book and seventh in Division III this season.

Two other Scripps students had standout performances at the Multi-Dual, including senior Vaiva Palunas who won two throw events and junior Tyra Abraham who won the 100-meter and 200. Palunas recorded a 13.26m (43-06) in the shotput and 46.24m (151-08) in the discus while Abraham ran a 12.16 in the 100 and 25.14 in the 200.

In the distance events, sophomore Malea Martin (CMC) took first place in the 5000 with a time of 18:25.06 while senior Carmen Mejia (SC) won the 1500 with a time of 4:47.59. Mejia also finished second in the 800 behind junior Bryn McKillop (SC). The senior recorded a time of 2:19.53 while McKillop finished at 2:15.80.

Freshman Tyson-Jay Saena (HMC) took a tremendous step forward in the throws competition, recording two PRs in his win on the shotput and second place finish in the hammer. Saena recorded a 14.03m (46-00.50) in the shotput and 43.66m (143-03) in the hammer. His performance set the tone for CMS for the duration of the meet and proved to be the deciding factor in their first-place finish.

Senior Cam Van (CMC) swept through the jumps, taking first place in the long jump, triple jump, and high jump. His recorded a seasonal best 2.00m (6-06.75) in the high jump and a PR 14.77m (48-05.50) in the triple jump. His triple jump mark places him second All-Time CMS and ranks fifth in Div. III this season. Van also recorded a 7.03m in the long jump.

Sophomore Ben Iten (HMC) ran a lifetime best to win the 1500 with a time of 3:59.39 while senior Zane Bodenbender (HMC) took first place in the pole vault competition with a PR 4.42m (14-06).
