Two CMS records set at Pomona-Pitzer Invitational

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Plenty of records were set by the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field team this past Saturday at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational. Featuring over 1,400 athletes from 26 colleges in four states as well several open and post-collegiate athletes from five different countries, this event focused on individual performances with no team scoring. Among the Stags and No. 2 Athenas who participated, two CMS records and four All-Time CMS performances were set at this meet.

Junior Tyra Abraham (SC) experienced a breakthrough in the 200-meter, setting the CMS record and Division III best with a time of 24.36. The junior made some adjustment to her approach, running aggressively in the first half of the race and carrying that momentum in the final half to finish fourth overall and second among collegians. She also finished fourth overall (second among collegians) in the 100-meter with a time of 12.20. In the women's 800-meter, senior Carmen Mejia (SC) finished first among collegians (second overall) with a time of 2:09.89.

In the hammer, senior Vaiva Palunas (SC) finished fourth overall (second collegian) after setting a CMS record throw of 56.59 meters (185-08). With this mark, Palunas moved up to third on the SCIAC All-Time list and ranks second in Division III.

Senior Liz Lee (HMC) had a big day in the long jump, setting a personal record of 5.57 m (18-03.25) to take sixth overall (second collegian). This mark moves her to sixth in the All-Time CMS record book as she currently sits 17th in Division III this season.

In the men's 800, senior Joshua Sealand (HMC) led the entire race to win with a big PR of 1:51.38. His time is fifth All-Time for CMS and fourth in Division III for 2017. Sophomore Ben Iten (HMC) had a solid performance in the 5000, finishing fourth overall (second collegian) with a time of 15:11.31.

The entire team will compete together in the final SCIAC Multi-Dual on Saturday, April 15 at Occidental College against Occidental, Cal Lutheran, and Redlands. The Athenas will be looking to close out their third straight undefeated dual meet season, while the Stags aim to finish on the top of the dual meet standings by knocking off all three teams, including No. 4 Occidental.
