Records set at track and field alumni meet
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The overcast weather did not dampen the festive reunion at Zinda Field on Saturday afternoon as the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps track and field team hosted its annual alumni meet. While it was an opportunity for the current members of the track and field team to engage in friendly competition with alumni, the Stags and Athenas came out to put on their best performance. Senior Joshua Sealand (HMC) broke the meet record in the 3200 meter by five seconds with a time of 9:10.89, breaking the previous record held by alumni Bennet Naden. Junior Emily Bassett (CMC) set the hammer meet record while senior Vaiva Palunas (CMC) surpassed her own Discus meet record.
Nearly 70 alumni returned to the campus, with the furthest alum dating back to John McKniff from the class of 1972. McKniff held the men's high jump record for 20 years and was also a member of the Stags basketball team.
"We, as a coaching staff, are very pleased with the turnout of this year's Alumni meet," said Head Coach Glenn Stewart. "It was really enjoyable to watch the alumni come back and share the excitement of the season starting with the current student-athletes. We had good competition but more importantly [it was about] the time spent with old and new friends."
