
CMS Men's Tennis Moves to 2-0 in SCIAC, Defeats Occidental 8-1
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team took a 2-1 lead after doubles and swept singles as it earned an 8-1 win over Occidental on Friday afternoon at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
With the win, the third-ranked Stags improve to 9-4 on the year and 2-0 in the SCIAC, extending their winning streak in SCIAC-sponsored matches to 146 (140 regular season, six postseason tournament), dating back to 2005. Occidental falls to 10-4 overall and 0-2 in the league with the loss.
Advik Mareedu and Warren Pham won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles and then both picked up singles wins. Mareedu earned his with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 1 to stretch the CMS lead to 3-1, and Pham had a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 5 to give CMS its sixth point.
Christian Settles earned the fourth point for CMS with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4, and then Morgan Schilling provided the clincher at No. 6, rolling to a 6-0 win in the first set and then taking the second 7-6 (8-6 in the tiebreaker).
Ian Freer and Daniel Blackman took an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles, and Freer went three sets to get a singles win as well, capturing a 6-2, 4-6, 10-4 decision. Matthew Robinson also earned a singles win at No. 2 (6-4, 6-3).
CMS will be back in action tomorrow when it travels to Redlands for a 3 p.m. contest.
