Liu Earns All-America Honors in Singles, Arimilli and Martin in Doubles

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Robert Liu officially earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-America honors in singles for the 2021-22 season, and Philip Martin and Nathan Arimilli earned the distinction in doubles, the organization announced this week.

CMS also finished the season as the No. 5 ranked team in the nation in the final ITA poll after reaching the NCAA quarterfinals for the 11th straight season. Liu ended the year ranked No. 12 in the nation in singles, with Martin also ranked at No. 32. 

Liu originally earned his All-America distinction in the fall, by winning the ITA West Regional singles title (defeating teammate Ethan Carroll in the final) and advancing to the ITA Cup Quarterfinals. He met other All-America criteria as well, by earning one of the eight seeds in the NCAA Division III Singles Championship (No. 4) and ending the year ranked in the top 20. 

Liu's senior season saw him leap up into the No. 1 spot in the CMS ladder after playing at No. 4 and No. 5 his first three seasons before the pandemic. He thrived in the top spot, compiling a 22-5 singles record, with his only dual losses in the regular season coming to Division I USC and Middlebury's Stan Morris, who was the eventual NCAA singles champion. 

Arimilli and Martin also earned their All-America stripes in the fall, when they reached the national doubles finals of the ITA Cup before falling in three sets to a team from Williams. They had a 12-4 record playing together, before CMS adjusted its doubles lineups in the spring, and led the No. 1 doubles team from USC 5-4 before their match was left unfinished.

Arilmilli finished with a 20-6 record in doubles, closing out the year with seven straight wins playing with Jack Katzman, while Martin was 21-6 and closed out playing with Matthew Robinson and earning an 8-4 win in the NCAA Quarterfinals. 

CMS finished 27-7 on the year, and with its No. 5 final ranking, the Stags have now ended the year ranked in the top six in the country for each of the last 16 seasons (including a shortened season in 2020 due to COVID, when they were ranked No. 2). That stretch has also included a No. 1 finish in 2015 after winning the national title, five No. 2 rankings, and two No. 3 rankings.
