Liu Earns No. 4 Seed in Singles at Division III ITA Cup

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Senior Robert Liu, who won the singles championship at the 2021 ITA West Regionals last weekend, will be the No. 4 seed in the Division III ITA Cup singles tournament, which gets underway on Thursday morning in Rome, Georgia.

Liu and Ethan Carroll, who also advanced to the ITA West Regional finals before falling to Liu in an all-CMS battle, will begin play on Thursday morning at 9 a.m. (EST) at the Rome Tennis Center. Liu will face Luke Lemaitre of George Fox in the Round of 16, and if he wins that match, he will move on to meet the winner between Jhonny Acosta of North Carolina Wesleyan and Thomas Yu of Johns Hopkins in the quarterfinals at 12:30 p.m.

Carroll, meanwhile, drew the No. 3 seed in the field, Chase Cohen of Williams in his opening match. A win there would send him through to meet the winner of Cole Lindwall of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Moses Hutchinson of Mary Washington at 12:30 p.m.

The doubles team of Philip Martin and Nathan Arimilli will also be in action on Thursday afternoon at 4:30 p.m., facing Max Loen and Nyathi Motlojoa of Luther in their first match. A win would advance the Stag duo on to Friday's quarterfinals, where they could meet the same Pomona-Pitzer duo (Jansen Comadena/Owen Kelley) who they lost to 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker in the ITA West Regional finals, if the Sagehens get past the fourth-seed of Aidan Harris and Noah Laber from Middlebury.
