CMS Men's Tennis Sends Seven Through to Saturday's ITA Singles Quarterfinals

ITA West Regional Brackets

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team had seven players win two singles matches on the first day of the ITA West Regionals on Friday, taking up almost all of the eight spots in Saturday's quarterfinal round.

Jack Katzman, Matthew Robinson and Robert Liu came in as the top three seeds and advanced as expected, as did fifth seed Philip Martin and sixth seed Ian Freer. Martin had a tight battle to prevail in his second round match, falling in the first set to Matthew Feng, but bouncing back for a dramatic 1-6, 7-5, 1-0 (14-12) win.

The Stags also had two upset winners as Christopher Li defeated seventh-seeded Ishaan Kannan 6-3, 6-0 and then took a tight win over Hayden Snyder 1-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-6) to reach the quarterfinals. Ethan Carroll knocked off fourth-seeded Caleb Wilkins 6-3, 6-4 and then defeated Parker McBride 6-3, 6-1.

Tomorrow's quarterfinals will feature CMS vs. CMS on three courts, as Katzman and Martin will meet each other (Katzman already defeated teammate Nathan Arimilli in the second round 7-5, 6-4). Li and Carroll will meet in a battle of unseeded Stags for the right to move on to the semifinals, while Freer and Robinson will meet in another quarterfinal. Freer had the quickest day for the Stags, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-0.

Only one round of doubles was played on Friday, and the Stags had similar success with Katzman and Liu winning 8-3, Freer and Robinson winning 8-2, Daniel Blackman and Morgan Schilling taking an 8-5 win, and Martin and Arimilli earning an 8-5 victory.

Doubles will get underway first on Saturday morning at 8:30 with the Round of 16, with the quarterfinals following immediately after.
