Julian Gordy to Attend 2019 US Open this Month to Receive ITA Arthur Ashe Leadership Award

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Graduated men's tennis senior Julian Gordy will head to New York later this month to receive his NCAA Division III Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, as part of the opening weekend of the 2019 US Open Championship.

The ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Leadership and Sportsmanship Award recognizes outstanding student-athletes in all five divisions (NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA and JUCO) at the regional and national level. This prestigious award, which dates back to 1982, is presented to the men's and women's national student-athletes who have exhibited outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements. 

The awards ceremony will take place in Forest Hills, New York at the ITA Arthur Ashe Jr. Weekend and Awards Luncheon on the weekend of Aug. 24-25, prior to the start of the 2019 US Open Championship on Monday, August 26. The 10 winners (men's and women's selections from NCAA Division I, II, III, NAIA and JuCo) will also participate in the USTA's annual Arthur Ashe Jr. Kids Day at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center,which is the largest single-day grassroots tennis event in the world, with over 30,000 attendees. 

Gordy was announced as the winner of the 2019 Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award during the NCAA Division III Championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan, after helping the Stags advance to the national championship match for the second time in his career. A team captain, Gordy was a first-team All-American in doubles for the third straight year, while also earning first-team All-SCIAC honors. He finished his career ranked No. 5 all-time in CMS history in career doubles wins (97) and No. 10 in combined singles and doubles wins (157). 

In addition to his athletic accolades, Gordy was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-District team after carrying over a 3.8 grade point average in economics, and earned the Hank Krieger Award from the CMS athletic department, which is presented to a graduating senior who exhibits athletic excellence, academic excellence and leadership. 

The Stags spent six weeks ranked as the No. 1 team in the nation this spring, before finishing with a 33-2 record and a runner-up finish in the NCAA Division III Championships.
