Top Ranked Stags Impress With Saturday Sweep
CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 1 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned 9-0 shutouts against Occidental and Marymount California on Saturday, improving their record to 23-1 on the season and 4-0 in SCIAC. Senior Alfred Simental (HMC), juniors Oscar Burney (CMC) and Jake Williams (HMC), and freshman Ethan Carroll (HMC) were all three match winners, leading CMS on a day where the Stags failed to lose a single set.
With their fourth straight doubles sweep, the Stags improve to 56-16 in doubles matches this season. Julian Gordy (CMC) and Nikolai Parodi (CMC) earned their second important conference and regional win in two days at the No. 1 position against Occidental. Burney paired with 2018 partner Jack Katzman (CMC) at No. 2 against Occidental in the morning, and then with Robert Liu (CMC) against MCU in the afternoon for two of his three wins. Simental and Williams were winners at No. 3 against Oxy and No. 2 against MCU, improving their record to 5-2 as a team.
In singles, Matthew Jacobs (CMC) and Carroll were the only Stags to play in both matches. Jacobs won his seventh and eighth matches of the season, while Carroll's pair of straight set wins give him ten on the year. CMS clinched at No. 3 against Occidental, as Burney won his sixth straight. Williams provided the clinch at No. 5 against MCU, and is now 7-0 in dual match play.
With the win against Occidental, CMS maintains its conference lead at 4-0. Next up for the Stags is No. 25 Caltech on Friday, April 19 at 3 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS will then travel to Cal Lutheran on Saturday, April 20, before returning home to play Division I UC Riverside at 3 PM.
