Stags Advance to Stag-Hen Title Match With Wins Over No. 26 Skidmore and No. 12 Sewanee

CLAREMONT, Calif. - No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis won two matches Friday to advance to the Stag-Hen championship match for the eleventh time in the twelve year tournament history. The Stags defeated No. 26 Skidmore 7-2 in the opening round, before overwhelming No. 12 Sewanee by a 9-0 score in the semifinal. CMS will face No. 3 Bowdoin, who defeated No. 38 Southwestern 8-1 and No. 14 Pomona-Pitzer 7-2. The Stags will look to avenge a 7-2 loss to the Polar Bears in the 2018 title match.

Senior captain Julian Gordy (CMC) led the Stags with four wins, two at No. 3 singles and two at No. 1 doubles with Nikolai Parodi (CMC). Gordy is now 5-0 in singles dual match play, having not lost a set thus far. Sophomore Jack Katzman (CMC) also contributed four convincing wins. He and partner Robert Liu (CMC) won twice at No. 2 doubles to extend their unbeaten streak to six as a pair. Katzman also won twice at No. 2 singles, giving the Stags decisive early leads in both dual matches on Friday. At No. 1 singles, Parodi continues to look for the form that has had him at the top of the collegiate rankings over the past two seasons. Against Skidmore, Parodi led 5-3 in the first set before falling 7-3 in the tie-break; he then led 4-0 in the second, dropped the next four games, and then held on to win the set 6-4, only to fall 10-7 in the decisive match tie-break. Against Sewanee, he returned to stay in the match twice, down a set and 5-4, and then again at 6-5. His second break of serve to stay in the match led to an 8-6 second set tie-break win, followed by a 10-4 match tie-break to complete the Stags' 9-0 shutout.

CMS is now 9-0. The Stags are 6-3 in Stag-Hen championship matches, with the 2012 final not played due to rain. CMS and Bowdoin will meet for the sixth time in the history of the Stag-Hen Invitational, with the Stags leading the series 4-1.
