Five Stags and Team Recognized by ITA for Academic Success

Five members of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team were selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Scholar Athletes for the 2017-18 season. As a team, the Stags were recognized with the ITA All-Academic Team award.

Julian Gordy (CMC '19), Matthew Jacobs (CMC '20), Robert Liu (CMC '21), Casey Morris (CMC '21), and Jake Williams (HMC '20) all were selected. This is the third time Gordy has been an ITA Scholar-Athlete, second time for Jacobs and Williams, and first selection for Liu and Morris.

Gordy, the team captain and an All-American, had a 3.8 GPA during the year as an Economics-Accounting major. He went 16-4 in singles and 20-7 in doubles during the season.

Jacobs is an Economics and Psychology major with a 3.79 GPA. He went 12-4 in singles and 3-0 in doubles in 2018.

In his first year on campus, Liu had a 3.79 GPA as an Economics major. On the court he went 5-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles. Also a first-year Stag, Morris had a 3.5 GPA. Morris was a perfect 7-0 in singles and 5-0 in doubles as a freshman.

Williams is a Computer Science and Mathematics major who had a 3.8 GPA during the academic year. He was 6-0 in singles and 9-3 in doubles in 2018.

In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).

The Stags went 30-4 this season, won the SCIAC title, and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division III Championships.
