CLAREMONT, Calif. - The No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis opened the 2018 NCAA Tournament on Friday afternoon with a 5-1 victory over the UC Santa Cruz Banana Slugs in the Second Round. The victory moves CMS into the Regional Final on Saturday afternoon against Trinity (TX), a 5-3 winner over UT-Tyler in the other Second Round match. CMS will face Trinity for the second time this season, having defeated the No. 15 Tigers in the opening round of the ITA National Indoor Team Championships in February.

Sophomore Nikolai Parodi (CMC) led the Stags on Friday, with wins at No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles. Parodi and partner Julian Gordy (CMC) avenged a loss from March 30 with a dominating 8-3 win over UC Santa Cruz's top pair Ryan Dugan and Chad Stone. Gordy and Parodi improve to 24-5 as a team, and have now won 13 straight since losing to Dugan and Stone six weeks ago. Parodi earned his 25th singles win of the season and second in less than two weeks against UC Santa Cruz's Chad LeDuff. Parodi's 6-3, 6-4 triumph put the Stags up 4-1, shortly after sophomore Daniel Park's (CMC) 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 5 singles. Oscar Burney earned the clinch for CMS, also avenging a loss from late March against Santa Cruz's Chad Stone. Burney extends his singles win streak to nine at the No. 3 position, with his last loss coming to Stone.

CMS improves to 29-3 overall and has now reached at least the Round of 16 in the D3 NCAA Team Tournament for 13 consecutive years.
