No. 2 Stags Top No. 6 Washington-St. Louis, Move to Championship Match

ST. PETER, Minn. - The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 6-3 victory over the No. 6 Washington-St. Louis Bears in the ITA National Team Indoor Semifinals. The Stags took a 2-1 lead after doubles play and battled their way to win four of six singles in defeating Wash U. The Stags move on to the ITA Indoor National Championship on Sunday against No. 1 Emory on Sunday at 8:00 AM CST in a re-match of last year's NCAA Championship match.

The Stags were led by freshman Jack Katzman (CMC), who won at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles, and sophomore Daniel Park (CMC), who won at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles. Katzman and sophomore Oscar Burney (CMC) gave CMS a 1-0 lead with their fourth dual match win of the season at No. 2. Park and sophomore Jake Berber (CMC) followed with an 8-2 win at No. 3 to put the Stags up 2-0. Wash U evened the match at 2-all with wins at No. 1 doubles and No. 3 singles before CMS clinched the match with singles wins at Nos. 4, 2, and 6. Park's 6-0, 6-3 win at No. 4 was his fourth straight and seventh overall. Katzman stayed perfect in singles dual match play, giving CMS a 4-2 lead with his 6-3, 7-6(4) win at No. 2. Junior Avinash Vemuri (CMC) clinched moments later at No. 6 singles with his 7-6(6), 6-2 victory. Sophomore Nikolai Parodi (CMC) closed out the scoring for CMS, earning a three-set win at No. 1 singles.

CMS is 6-0 on the season and will be appearing in its second ITA National Team Indoor Championship match in four trips to the tournament.
