Friday Double-Dip Yields Two Victories for Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned two emphatic victories on Friday, defeating No. 12 (NAIA) San Diego Christian and D3 West Region opponent Colorado College by 7-2 and 9-0 scores. The Stags swept the doubles in both dual matches and won three singles matches without losing a game. These were the final two home dual matches before CMS heads to the ITA D3 National Team Indoor Championships in St. Peter, Minnesota where they will begin play next Friday as the No. 2 seed.

The Stags used twelve players for the second consecutive weekend, improving to 10-2 in doubles matches and 22-2 in singles play. Three CMS players won singles matches without the loss of a game. Freshman Casey Morris (CMC) and sophomore Jay Yeam (CMC) won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 and No. 6 against San Diego Christian. Junior Avi Vemuri also earned a shutout at No. 3 singles against Colorado College. Vemuri also made his 2018 dual match doubles debut with sophomore Matthew Jacobs (CMC) at No. 3.Vemuri and Jacobs are the sixth doubles pair that the Stags have used in their first four matches.

The second-ranked Stags are now 4-0 and will play No. 13 Trinity University in the opening round of the ITA D3 National Team Indoor Championships in St. Peter, Minnesota on Friday, February 23. CMS faced Trinity twice in 2017, beating the Tigers 6-3 in San Antonio in March, and then again in the NCAA Round of 16 in Claremont in May. Other teams in the ITA D3 National Team Indoor field include No. 1 Emory, No. 6 Washington University in St. Louis, No. 9 Chicago, No. 10 Carnegie Mellon, No. 11 Redlands, and host and No. 16 Gustavus Adolphus. The tournament will conclude on Sunday, February 25.
