2018 Season Opens with Convincing Victories over NAIA Foes

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team opened the 2018 season with a pair of 8-1 victories on Saturday. CMS defeated No. 10 (NAIA) Arizona Christian on Saturday morning, before topping No. 13 (NAIA) Westmont by an identical 8-1 score. In both matches, the Stags won two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play and then swept all six matches to earn the 8-1 victories. Twelve Stags earned straight set singles victories, while five doubles teams were also victorious on opening day.

Three Stags made their dual match debuts on Saturday. Freshmen Casey Morris (CMC) and Jack Katzman (CMC), and sophomore Oscar Burney (CMC) all earned singles and doubles victories. Morris paired with sophomore Jay Yeam (CMC) at No. 3 doubles against Arizona Christian, and then returned at No. 4 singles for the Stags' first singles win in the afternoon match against Westmont. Katzman and Burney formed CMS' No. 2 doubles team against Westmont and then played in the top two singles spots respectively against the Warriors.

Both dual matches were clinched for CMS at the No. 6 position on Saturday. Against ACU, it was Yeam who got the Stags' fifth point, with a 6-4, 6-1 win. Jake Williams (HMC) earned the clinching victory against Westmont by an identical 6-4, 6-1 score. Both players also trailed 4-3 in the first sets, but took control of their opponents to win nine of the final ten games of their matches.

Junior Captain Julian Gordy (CMC) and sophomore Nikolai Parodi (CMC) were the only Stags to play in three matches on the day. After dropping a close 9-7 decision at No. 1 doubles against ACU, Gordy and Parodi won their singles matches at No. 1 and No. 3 respectively, then returned in the afternoon to earn a doubles victory at the top doubles spot.

Next up for the Stags is another doubleheader against non-conference opponents. CMS takes on No. 12 (NAIA) San Diego Christian at 1:00 PM, and then West Region D3 opponent Colorado College at 6:00 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center this Friday,
