Stags open conference tourney with 5-0 win over Oxy
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team (26-3, 8-0) opened SCIAC tournament play with a 5-0 win at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Friday. The Stags will face fifth-seeded Cal Lutheran (7-16, 3-5) on Saturday at 9 a.m. in the semifinals. Final rounds will be played at Pomona-Pitzer's Pauley Tennis Complex not before 12 p.m.
CMS got its fourth doubles sweep against a SCIAC opponent this season, yielding only five total games in three pro-sets. Senior captain Daniel Morkovine (CMC) and freshman Nikolai Parodi (CMC) continued their winning ways, earning a fifth consecutive victory playing at the top position. Senior Alex Brenner (CMC) and sophomore Julian Gordy (CMC) paired for the first time at No. 3 doubles, getting the Stags' second point with an 8-3 win. CMS' No. 2 team of freshman Jake Berber (CMC) and senior captain Glenn Hull (CMC) earned their eighth win in team matches together with their 8-2 victory.
With the dual match format shortened for tournament play due to anticipated inclement weather, CMS needed only two singles wins to clinch. Senior Max Macey (CMC) got the Stags their fourth point of the afternoon with his 23rd singles win of the season. Macey was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at the No. 1 spot in just over an hour. CMS took commanding leads at each of the other five singles positions, before freshman Matthew Jacobs (CMC) clinched with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5.
