Stags nearly perfect in sweep of UCSC and ACU
CLAREMONT, Calif. – The No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team moved to 14-0 on the season with convincing 9-0 and 8-1 wins over UC Santa Cruz and Arizona Christian on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Freshman Nikolai Parodi (CMC) won four matches, including two straight set victories at the No. 1 singles position, to lead the Stags.
CMS unveiled two new doubles pairs on Saturday and earned its fourth and fifth doubles sweeps of the season. Senior captain Glenn Hull (CMC) partnered freshman Daniel Park (CMC) at No. 2, and the pair earned 8-6 and 8-3 wins. Parodi teamed with freshman Jay Yeam (CMC) at No. 3, and they enjoyed similar success with two 8-3 wins on the day. Sophomore Julian Gordy (CMC) and senior captain Daniel Morkovine (CMC) stayed intact as CMS' No. 1 team, and also earned two wins.
In singles, CMS used ten different players to win 11 of 12 matches. Parodi and senior Alex Brenner (CMC) were the only singles players to appear in both dual matches. Like Parodi, Brenner won both of his matches in straight sets at the No. 4 position. In the most unusual match of the day, Gordy dropped the first set 6-0 at the No. 6 spot against UC Santa Cruz, and then rattled off twelve straight games for an 0-6, 6-0, 6-0 victory. CMS improved to 11-4 in three-set matches this season, having won its last ten. The Stags were 4-1 in tie-breaks in the two matches, improving to 17-11 in tie-breaks on the season.
CMS will face No. 13 Williams (7-1) on Tuesday, March 28 at 4 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
