Doubles depth leads Stags to wins over Caltech and Concordia

CLAREMONT, Calif. – No. 6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team earned its first two doubles sweeps of the season as the Stags easily defeated Caltech and Concordia-Irvine by scores of 8-1 and 7-2 on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. The Stags used six different doubles pairs in the dual matches just a day after three CMS doubles teams competed in the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla, California.

In the morning match and SCIAC home opener against Caltech, senior Max Macey (CMC) and junior Avinash Vemuri (CMC) were 8-0 victors at No. 3 doubles, giving the Stags their first of six doubles wins on the day. Macey and Vemuri were also winners at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, as CMS took five of six singles matches against the Beavers. Freshman Jay Yeam (CMC) remained undefeated in singles, winning in straight sets at the No. 2 position for his fourth victory of the spring season.

Against Division II opponent Concordia-Irvine in the afternoon match, CMS was even more dominant, yielding only five games total in three pro-sets. Macey and freshman Jake Williams (HMC) paired for the first time together at No. 3 and quickly put the Stags ahead 1-0.  Senior Daniel Morkovine (CMC) and sophomore Julian Gordy (CMC) followed with an 8-2 win at No. I, before senior Glenn Hull (CMC) and Jay Yeam (CMC) completed the sweep with their 8-2 win at No. 2.

Co-captains Hull and Morkovine continued their singles successes at No. 1 and 2, and either have yet to drop a set in three dual matches. Hull's straight set win clinched the dual match for CMS, and Morkovine's 75th career singles win put the Stags up 7-0. Junior Patrick Wildman (CMC) made his 2017 debut at No. 6 singles, winning 6-2, 6-2.

With the two wins on Saturday, CMS is now 4-0 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC. The dual match wins come at the end of a successful run for three Stags doubles teams at the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla, where Morkovine and Gordy, Hull and Yeam, and Jake Berber (CMC) and Daniel Park (CMC) won three of six matches against teams from USC, UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal, William & Mary and Oklahoma State.

Next up for the Stags is No. 29 Swarthmore (0-4) this Thursday, Mar. 9 at 6 p.m. at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
