Freshmen rule as Stags win two on opening day

CLAREMONT, Calif. - Freshmen Matthew Jacobs (CMC) and Jake Williams (HMC) won clinching singles matches, as Claremont-Mudd-Scripps overcame 2-1 deficits after doubles to defeat No. 25 Bates and No. 30 Brandeis on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Jacobs and Williams were two of four first-year players making their dual match debuts for CMS.

Stags freshmen won five of six singles matches on the day, with Jay Yeam (CMC) contributing two and Daniel Park (CMC) one in addition to the wins by Jacobs and Williams. Williams also partnered sophomore Alfred Simental (CMC) to earn wins at No. 3 doubles against both Bates and Brandeis.

Despite the strong play at No. 3 doubles, CMS struggled to capitalize on several opportunities at the top two positions which would have given them early leads against both teams. Against Bates, senior Glenn Hull (CMC) and Yeam had two match points at 4-7, 15-40, but lost the last five games to fall at No. 2. Similarly, senior Daniel Morkovine (CMC) and Park held a 6-3 advantage against Brandeis at No. 1, but yielded the final five games in an 8-6 loss.

Both Hull and Morkovine seemed to channel their doubles frustrations into focused singles play however, with the senior co-captains winning both of their matches comfortably at No. 1 and No. 2. Hull fought back from a 1-4 deficit in the first set against last year's NCAA singles quarterfinalist Ben Rosen of Bates. Hull won the first set in a tie-break and then needed only one break of serve in the second set to complete the 7-6(4), 6-4 win in the morning. Hull had little trouble in subduing Brandeis' No. 1 Michael Arguello 6-2, 6-3 in the afternoon match. Morkovine yielded only three games in two matches at No. 2, and pulled CMS even in both dual matches with his decisive wins. Rohan Shankar (HMC) kept the Stags seniors perfect in singles with his straight set win at No. 6 against Bates.

Next up for the Stags is the 128th Annual Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in La Jolla beginning on Thursday, Mar. 2. Three doubles teams will represent CMS in this prestigious tournament that features some of the top Division I and open teams in the country. CMS then returns to host Caltech (1-1) in their SCIAC home opening contest followed by Division II Concordia University (2-2) at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 4.
