Men’s Tennis sees six Stags named to ITA Scholar-Athlete list

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis program found just as much success in the classroom as it did on the court as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) named the Stags on the All-Academic Team.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named four members of the No. 2 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Men’s Tennis team to the All-American team on June 8 after the conclusion of the NCAA National Championships.

During the 2016-17 academic year, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps athletic department won 14 hard-fought regular season championships in the Southern Californian Intercollegiate and its athletes were honored with many outstanding awards.

Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Nicole Tan (CMC '20) and Nikolai Parodi (CMC '20) each wrapped up their first season playing collegiate tennis as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division III Female and Male Rookie of the Year, respectively. Additionally, the Athenas' head coach, Dave Schwarz, was named the women's Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year.
Parodi finishes as National Runner-Up in singles title match

Nikolai Parodi (CMC '20) wrapped up his freshman season as the National Runner-up in the NCAA Division III Men's Tennis singles final. In a rematch from earlier in the week, Parodi fell to Lubomir Cuba of Middlebury College 6-1, 6-1 in the final.

Nikolai Parodi (CMC ’20) will be competing for a national championship for the second time this week in the singles final at the NCAA Championships tomorrow. Both Parodi and Daniel Morkovine (CMC ’17) competed in the quarterfinals on Friday morning and Parodi’s two wins today advanced him to the singles title match.

The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team came up against fierce competition in Emory University in the NCAA Men’s Tennis National Championship match. The Stags went down 3-0 in doubles competition and were unable to recover in singles play, ultimately falling 5-2.

For the second time in three years, the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis program advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament after a hard-fought 5-0 victory over No. 5 Wesleyan on Monday evening.

The field is set for the Elite Eight of the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Team Championships. Team competition will span May 22-24 with the championship matches at 11 a.m. PDT for the men and 7 p.m. PDT for the women on Wednesday, May 24.

Senior men’s tennis player Daniel Morkovine (CMC) and junior men’s golfer Jonathan Shaw (CMC) earned Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America.
