NCAAs open as CMS cruises by Santa Cruz in second round
CLAREMONT, Calif. – Similar to the start of last year's postseason run, the 2016 postseason started for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team with a 5-0 win over UC Santa Cruz in the second round of the NCAA Division III Championships. CMS' win on May 13 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center, puts CMS in the third round against Texas-Tyler, who defeated Whitman 5-3, in the other second round match in Claremont.
The Stags and Texas-Tyler's third round match is on Saturday, May 14 at 10 a.m. in Claremont.
Against Santa Cruz, the Stags took #1 and #3 doubles with relative ease. Senior captain Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) and doubles partner, junior Daniel Morkovine (San Carlos, CA), defeated Adrian Sirovica and Kyle Richter 8-4 in a match-up of the #1 (CMS) and #5 (UCSC) doubles teams in the West. Junior Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR) and senior Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) followed with an 8-3 win at the #3 position.
The doubles sweep was rounded out by freshman Julian Gordy (Tarzana, CA) and senior Oliver Seifert (Los Altos, CA) at #2 doubles, but the duo had a bit more difficult time pulling it out. Gordy and Seifert came back to win 8-5 after being down 3-1 and 5-4 in the match.
In singles, Hull took care of business at #2, 6-0, 6-1 over Chadwick Stone to push CMS within a point of securing the win. Hull played a focused match, made strong decisions and wasted few shots en route to the win. Butts closed out the 5-0 win at #1 singles, 6-3, 6-4 against Sirovica.
