Stags defeat Poets, face Pomona-Pitzer in SCIAC tourney final
Top-seeded CMS Stags Tennis advanced to the SCIAC tournament final with a 5-0 win over Whittier on Saturday, setting up a Mother's Day title match with second seeded Pomona-Pitzer. CMS earned its third consecutive doubles sweep before Patrick Wildman (So. - Cincinnati, OH) and Daniel Morkovine (Jr. - San Carlos, CA) won at #5 and #3 singles to clinch the victory.
Sunday's match with the Sagehens is the second meeting of the season between CMS and Pomona-Pitzer. The Stags won a regular season conference match at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on April 1, by a 6-3 score. This is the third straight year that the two conference rivals have met in the SCIAC tournament final. CMS won 9-0 at Cal State Northridge in the 2014 final, and 7-2 at Pasadena City College in last year's championship match. As in 2015, this year's match features two top ten nationally ranked teams in CMS at #2 and Pomona-Pitzer at #10, with the winner earning the conference's Automatic Qualification spot into the 2016 NCAA Division III tournament.
CMS is now 24-4 overall and 9-0 in conference play. Sunday's match with Pomona-Pitzer is scheduled for 2:00 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
