#2 Stags stop UConn and #18 Whitman
#2 CMS Stags Tennis returned to action on Thursday, defeating Division I UConn and #18 Whitman by 6-1 and 7-2 scores. CMS won five of six doubles matches, while three singles players earned two wins each.
Against UConn in the first match of the double-header, CMS' third pair Alex Brenner (Jr. - San Francisco, CA) and Oliver Seifert (Sr. - Los Altos, CA) were first to strike in doubles, capitalizing on an early break and then holding on for a 6-4 win. Senior captain Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) and Lestter Yeh (Sr. - Arcadia, CA) needed a service break just to stay in their match at #1, and after doing so at 5-4 down, rallied to win the final three games to give the Stags the doubles point. In the singles, CMS dropped only one set, with Brenner earning the clinch at the #5 position.
Against Whitman, the Stags started strong in doubles, earning early breaks on all three courts and held 3-0 leads at the top two positions. An overrule that would have given Butts and Yeh a two break lead at #1 shifted the momentum Whitman's way, and CMS' top team lost for only the second time this season. Brenner and Seifert's win at #3, followed by Max Macey (Jr. - Wilton, CT) and Bryan Mehall's (Sr. - Snowmass Village, CO) second win of the day at #2, gave CMS a 2-1 lead heading into singles. Butts was all business at #1, winning 11 of the last 12 games for a 6-3, 6-0 win to put the Stags up 3-1. He was followed by freshman Avi Vemuri's (Portland, OR) straight set romp at #5, setting up the clinch at #4 for Stags' senior Yeh.
CMS improves to 11-1 overall and will face #7 Amherst on Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
