Stags beat Oxy to stay atop SCIAC, then fall 6-1 at #75 UC Irvine
#3 CMS Stags Tennis moved to 6-0 in conference with a home shutout of Occidental, then traveled to Division I UC Irvine, falling to the #75 Anteaters 6-1 on Saturday afternoon. Senior Captain Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) was 3-0 on the day with two doubles wins and a singles win at UCI.
CMS earned its tenth doubles sweep of 2016 with relative ease against Oxy, yielding only two games total at the second and third positions. Senior Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) won at #2 doubles with Oliver Seifert (Sr. - Los Altos, CA), and then got the Stags their first singles point at the third position. Mehall was one of three Stags to win singles matches without losing a game, joined by juniors Alex Brenner (San Francisco, CA) and Rohan Shankar (San Jose, CA) at #4 and #6 respectively. Freshman Julian Gordy (Tarzana, CA) returned to the starting lineup after being sidelined since March 7, winning 6-2, 6-2 at #2 singles.
Against Divsion I UC Irvine, CMS was first to strike, as Butts and Daniel Morkovine (Jr. - San Carlos, CA) were 6-4 winners at #1 doubles. After losing at #3, the doubles point would be determined by the Stags' #2 pair of Gordy and Seifert. The first time tandem broke to stay in the match at 5-3, and then leveled it at 5-all, before the more experienced Irvine team completed the 7-5 win to give UCI a 1-0 lead going into the singles.
Butts' win at #1 singles was his third three-set win in five matches that have gone the distance this spring. Butts made his move down a set, but ahead 3-2 in the second. His service break to put him ahead 4-2 would be the first of five breaks over the last two sets. Butts is now 23-5 on the season.
With the double-header split, CMS is now 6-0 in conference and 20-3 overall. Next up for the Stags are two make-up matches from April 9, now re-scheduled for next Tuesday, April 19 at 7:00 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS leads Whittier 3-0 in matches and is up a set at the fourth through sixth singles positions when this dual match resumes. The Stags will simultaneously begin a match with #18 (Division II) Azusa Pacific.
