Doubles prowess makes for a Good Friday; Stags defeat #4 Chicago and Chapman 7-2

#2 CMS Stags Tennis earned doubles sweeps against #4 Chicago and  Chapman on Friday, leading to 7-2 wins against both opponents. CMS improves to 14-2 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC, and has now defeated ten nationally ranked D3 opponents thus far this spring.

CMS' top pair Skyler Butts (Sr. Capt - Santa Ana, CA) and Daniel Morkovine (Jr. - San Carlos, CA) were broken in the first game of the match, but then broke in two of the last three games to get the Stags their second point of the morning. Junior Max Macey (Wilton, CT) and Oliver Seifert (Sr. - Los Altos, CA) were first on the board for CMS at #2, needing only one service break for their 8-5 win. Junior Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR) and Lestter Yeh (Sr. - Arcadia, CA) completed the sweep after having two match points serving for the match at 7-6, but holding on for a 9-8(4) win at the third position.

Any thoughts of a comeback by the talented Maroons were put to rest early as the Stags' upperclassmen took control of the singles action. Yeh won convincingly at the #5 singles spot to put the Stags up 4-0, and then Hull clinched the victory with his 6-4, 6-4 win at #2, his fourth straight win at that position. Butts put CMS up 6-0 in a repeat performance of last season's first round NCAA win against Chicago's Nick Chua. Macey completed the scoring for the Stags with his match tie-break win at #4 singles.

In the afternoon match against SCIAC foe Chapman, the doubles sweep was led by #3 pair Hull and Yeh, who got their first shutout of the spring. Upperclassmen again led the singles charge for the Stags, as junior Rohan Shankar (San Jose, CA) was first to complete his match, winning 6-2, 6-1 at the #5 spot. Junior Alex Brenner (San Francisco, CA) got the clinch at #4 with his fourth dual match win of the spring, followed by senior Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) at the #3 position. The Chapman match also marked the return of Patrick Wildman (So. - Cincinnati, OH) to the Stags' lineup. Wildman's straight set win at #2 singles gave CMS their seventh and final point of the afternoon.

Next up for CMS is #14 Williams on Wednesday, March 30 at 4:00 PM at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
