Field for Men’s USTA/ITA Small College Regionals filled with Stags

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) released its draws for the 2014 USTA/ITA Small College West Regional tournament on Sept. 24 and the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men’s tennis team has garnered 12 singles slots, while six doubles teams from CMS have been selected. The tournament which runs over the weekend from Friday, Sept. 26 through Sunday, Sept. 28, is being hosted by Pomona-Pitzer, with matches being played at both CMS’ Biszantz Family Tennis Center and Pomona-Pitzer’s Pauley Tennis Complex. CMS Singles Participants and Results

Warren Wood: The senior captain reached the Round of 16 at the ITA Small College Regionals in 2013 as a junior…He is top seed in 2014 in the 64-man West Regional field…Defeated Cal Lutheran’s Jesse Knight in his opening match 6-0, 6-1, then defeated Redlands' Joey Dulle 6-4, 6-2…Defeated Pomona-Pitzer's Spencer Simonides 6-2, 6-3 in the Round of 16 and 6th seeded Jake Yasgoor 6-2, 6-1 in the quarterfinals...Will face unseeded teammate Glenn Hull in the semifinals at 9:00 AM on Sunday...In the 2013-14 season, had an 11-2 tournament record in singles play and went 21-6 and dual matches…Finished as the Division III national runner-up in the 2014 NCAA Division III Singles Championships.

Nik Marino: The senior captain did not participate in the Small College Regionals in 2013 as a junior because he was abroad…He is the No. 2 seed in the 2014 Small College Regionals…Defeated Ian Ross of Whittier 6-1, 6-1 in the first round, then beat Jimmy Soper of UC Santa Cruz 6-1, 6-1 to reach the Round of 16…Beat Redlands' Parker Wilson 6-0, 6-2 in the Round of 16, then unseeded teammate Bryan Mehall 6-3, 6-4 in the quarters...Faces 5th seeded Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands in the semis at 9:00 AM on Sunday...Had a 7-2 singles record in tournament play and an overall record of 27-6 in 2013-14…Was a semifinalist in the 2014 NCAA Division III Championships singles competition.

Skyler Butts: Won the 2013 Small College ITA West Regional and finished second at Nationals…He is the No. 4 seed in this year’s regional…Defeated Brett Buford of Chapman 6-0, 6-1 in the opening round, and Sean Hollister of UC Santa Cruz 6-2, 6-4 in the second round…Beat Jake Ly of Redlands 6-2, 6-4 in the Round of 16 before falling to 5th seeded Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands 7-6(6), 6-2 in the quarters ...Posted an 11-3 singles record in tournament play and was 33-3 overall in 2013-14.

Daniel Morkovine: A quarterfinalist as a freshman at the 2013 Small College Regionals…Beat Redlands players Max Licona and Teddy Jones in the opening rounds by scores of 7-5, 6-0, and 6-4, 6-4…Lost to 6th seed Jake Yasgoor of Pomona-Pitzer in the Round of 16 by a score of 6-2, 5-7, 6-2...Posted a 4-2 singles record in tournament play and was 22-5 overall in 2013-14.

Glenn Hull: Won the consolation bracket in 2013…Defeated Whittier's Tyler Linscott 6-1, 6-2 in the opening round, and then beat 9th seeded Justin Thompson of Chapman 6-1, 6-1 in the second round…Defeated Pomona-Pitzer's Graham Maassen 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16 and then 3rd seeded Moises Cardenas of Cal Lutheran 6-2, 6-1 in the quarters...Faces top seeded teammate Warren Wood at 9:00 AM on Sunday in the semis...Went 6-2 in tournaments and 15-3 overall in singles during the 2013-14 season.

Bryan Mehall: Defeated Jack Berger of Colorado College in the first round 6-0, 6-2, then toppled 9th seed Antony Bello of Pomona-Pitzer 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the Round of 16…Defeated Pomona-Pitzer's Joshua Kim 6-2, 3-0 Ret in the Round of 16, then fell in the quarters to 2nd seeded teammate Nik Marino 6-3, 6-4...Went 2-2 in tournaments and 5-3 overall in singles play in 2013-14.

Patrick Wildman: Made his Stags Tennis debut by beating 9th seed Connor Treacey of Cal Lutheran in the opening round 6-2, 6-3...lost to Pomona-Pitzer's Kaylan Chadalavada 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 in the second round.

Lestter Yeh: Lost to 6th seeded Jake Yasgoor of Pomona-Pitzer 7-5, 6-3 in the opening round before winning his first match in the consolation draw over Colorado College's Jason Guitierrez by a 6-0, 6-1 score…Took out Alexander Flora of UC Santa Cruz in the second round 6-0, 6-4, and Avery Chernin of Occidental in the quarters 6-3, 6-4...Will face Pomona-Pitzer's Thomas Low in the semis of the 1st round consolation draw at 9:00 AM on Sunday...Finished 3-2 in tournaments and 10-3 overall in singles play in 2013-14.

Max Macey: Made the quarterfinals of 2013 Small College Regionals…Defeated Cal Lutheran’s Lucas Tilly in the opening round 6-2, 6-1 before falling to Pomona-Pitzer's Joshua Kim 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in his second match…Defeated UC Santa Cruz's Chetan Munugal 7-5, 6-1 in the opening match of the 2nd round consolation draw, then defeated UC Santa Cruz's Derek Levchenko in the quarters 6-4, 3-6, (10-8)...Will face Chapman's Justin Thompson in the semis at 9:00 AM on Sunday...Went 5-2 in tournaments and 12-2 overall in singles matches in 2013-14.

Alex Brenner: Lost to third-seeded and 2013 semifinalist Moises Cardenas from Cal Lutheran 6-3, 6-3 in the opening round, then won his first round in the consolation draw over Lucas Tilly of Cal Lutheran, 6-4, 6-1...lost in the second round to Pomona-Pitzer's Thomas Low 7-6(2), 6-4.

Oliver Seifert: Lost to fifth-seeded Patrick Lipscomb of Redlands 6-2, 6-3 in the opening round before winning his first round in the consolation draw 1-6, 7-6, (10-5) over Garrett Deguchi of UC Santa Cruz...beat Graham Leahy of Redands 6-3, 6-0 in the second round before falling to Pomona-Pitzer's Thomas Low 3-6, 6-3, (10-8) in the quarters.

Max Sacks: Lost to Pomona-Pitzer’s Spencer Simonides 6-4, 6-0 in the opening round, then lost in the first round of the consolation draw to Cal Lutheran's Gio Valdez 6-3, 4-3 Ret.

CMS Doubles Team Participants and Results

Wood and Marino: The duo is the top-seeded doubles team in the 32 team regional…Defeated Burchett and Licona from Redlands in the opening round 8-3, then advanced to the quarterfinals with an 8-1 win over Chapman's Thompson and Mittledorf...Defeated Suchodolski and Jones of Redlands 8-3 in the quarters, and then Maassen and Simonides of Pomona-Pitzer 8-6 in the semis...They face Pomona-Pitzer's Hudson and Chadalavada in the championship match on Sunday afternoon.

Butts and Morkovine: The duo is the fifth-seeded doubles team at the regional...Defeated Tufenkian and Tilly of Cal Lutheran 8-1, and then Dancu and Howard of Occidental 8-4 to reach the quarterfinals...Defeated 2nd seeds Lipscomb and Leahy of Redlands 8-5 in the quarters before falling to Pomona-Pitzer's Hudson and Chadalavada 8-5 in the semis.

Mehall and Yeh: Defeated seventh-seeded Treacy and Valdez of Cal Lutheran 9-7 before falling to Pomona-Pitzer's Chadalavada and Hudson 8-3 in the second round...Lost to Cal Lutheran's Slater and Knight 8-5 in the semis of the 2nd round doubles consolation.

Seifert and Sacks: Lost to fourth-seeded Yasgoor and Bello of Pomona-Pitzer 8-3 in the opening round...Won their opening round in the 1st round consolation draw over Colorado College's Burger and Guitierrez 8-6, before withdrawing in the quarters (Sacks hamstring).

Hull and Wildman: Withdrew from their first round match (Wildman heat stroke).

Macey and Brenner: Lost to Redlands' Suchodolski and Jones 8-3 in the opening round...Defeated Whittier's Farmer and Stanko 8-4 in the opening round of the 1st round consolation draw before falling to UC Santa Cruz's Stone and Sirovica 9-8(5) in the quarters.
