CMS advances to Stag-Hen final with 8-1 wins over Wesleyan and Wash U

#2 CMS Stags Tennis won a pair of 8-1 matches against nationally ranked opponents on Friday to advance to the championship match of the Stag-Hen Invitational against Pomona-Pitzer. Warren Wood (Sr. Capt - Del Mar, CA) and Joe Dorn (Sr. - Washington D.C.) secured two singles wins and one doubles win as the Stags pulled away from #34 Wesleyan in the quarterfinal and #5 Wash U St. Louis in the semifinal.

In the morning match against Wesleyan, CMS earned a 2-1 advantage from the doubles despite trailing by an early break of serve at each of the three positions. The Stags then took over in singles, winning first sets at all but the top position. Playing #1 singles, captain Wood lost a one-break opening set but then cruised 6-2, 6-3 to gain the victory. Sophomore Max Macey (Wilton, CT), was similarly pushed in the opening set of his match at #6 singles, but toughed out a 10-8 tie-break and then held on for the straight set win.

Macey would go on to win a decisive third set match tie-break as part of a singles sweep of #5 Wash U in the afternoon. The Stags again took a 2-1 lead from the doubles, with senior captain Nik Marino (San Diego, CA) partnering Glenn Hull (So. - Brookings, OR) for an 8-2 win at #3 to get CMS on the scoreboard first. Marino was the only Stag to earn two singles and two doubles wins on the day, doing so with two different partners.

CMS hosts #9 Pomona-Pitzer at 9:30 AM on Saturday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
