Stags sweep Caltech and Cal Lu to advance to SCIAC title match
Senior captain Nik Marino (Del Mar, CA) won his 30th singles match of the season and record-breaking 105th of his career, as #1 CMS Stags Tennis swept Caltech and Cal Lutheran on Friday. CMS advances to its 10th consecutive SCIAC tournament final against #3 Pomona-Pitzer, who narrowly defeated #13 Redlands in the other semifinal.
Marino's win at #3 singles broke the record for career singles victories set by Lance Au ('91), who was 104-39 in four years as a Stag. It was Marino's third win on the day, having combined with sophomore Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR) to earn two pro-set wins at #3 doubles. Hull played in the top singles spot against Caltech in the tournament quarterfinal match; however because the dual match was played to decision, his match was abandoned with him leading 6-0, 3-0. Hull returned in the semifinal match against Cal Lutheran to win at #6 singles, again without losing a game.
Each of the other four CMS starters were also three match winners, including senior captain Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA), who defeated Cal Lutheran's #1 Moises Cardenas for the second time in a week. On Friday, Wood rebounded from a set and a break of serve down to win his seventh three-set match of the season. Wood is now 26-7 in singles and 27-4 in doubles on the season.
On Saturday at Pasadena City College, CMS will face Pomona-Pitzer for the third time this season.The Stags won the first two matches by scores of 8-1 on March 14 at CMS in the Stag-Hen tournament final, and by 6-3 in a conference match at Pomona-Pitzer on April 10.
