Stags' singles dominant in 8-1 win over #17 Redlands
#1 CMS Stags Tennis moved to 17-1 on the season and 3-0 in SCIAC with an 8-1 win over #17 Redlands on Friday at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center. CMS won all six singles matches in straight sets to pull away from the Bulldogs. Sophomore Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR) won his second straight at #6 singles to lead the Stags. Hull is now 8-0 in dual matches and 15-2 overall.
For the second straight dual match, CMS defeated a top twenty ranked Division III team by pulling away in every match that was close except for one. The Stags lone loss, at #3 doubles, was nearly salvaged when senior captain Nik Marino (San Diego, CA) and partner Bryan Mehall (Jr. - Snowmass Village, CO) fought back from 6-2 and two breaks down to level the match at 6-all, but couldn't hold on. At #1 and #2 singles, Warren Wood (Sr. Capt. - Del Mar, CA) and Skyler Butts (Jr. - Santa Ana, CA) got first set breaks at 4-5 and 4-all respectively before closing out their opening sets. No Stag singles player yielded more than four games in any set on the day.
CMS closes out a busy week of matches on Saturday with a double-header against #16 Gustavus Adolphus at 10:00 AM and #8 (NAIA) Westmont at 3:00 PM. CMS will host a USTA / ITA Campus Kids Day as part of the Gustavus Adolphus match. Admission is free and kids 6-12 are invited to watch the doubles matches and then participate in a hit-for-prizes clinic with the CMS Athenas at 11:00 AM.
