Stags handle Hopkins, move to 11-0

#2 CMS Stags Tennis defeated #7 Johns Hopkins indoors at the Green Spring Racquet Club on Friday, as the Stags remained perfect on their five match east coast road trip. Junior Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) won at #2 doubles with partner Daniel Morkovine (So. - San Carlos, CA) and then at #2 singles to lead CMS to its eighth win over a ranked Division III opponent this season.

The Stags got their third straight doubles sweep, punctuated by Nik Marino (Sr. Capt - San Diego, CA) and Bryan Mehall's (Jr. - Snowmass Village, CO) thrilling 9-7 win at #3. With a 3-0 lead heading into the singles, CMS won first sets at four of the six singles positions. Senior Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.) won his sixth straight singles match without the loss of set, this time winning 6-2,6-4 at #4 to put CMS up 4-1. Morkovine provided the clinching win at #5, avenging a loss to Johns Hopkins' Erik Lim in last season's NCAA team quarterfinal match. Butts and Marino completed the scoring for CMS with wins at #2 and #3 singles respectively. Butts served for the match at 6-2, 5-3 but couldn't close out the second set. As Marino held on for a second set tie-break win at #3, Butt asserted his dominance to pull away with a 6-2 win in the third set.

CMS concludes its east coast trip at the University of Pennsylvania on Saturday. At 11 AM EST, the Stags will face Georgetown. At 2 PM EST, they will face either the winner or loser of the Penn vs Temple match. Both matches will feature a simultaneous format of either five singles and two doubles, or six singles and one doubles, with each best of three match counting for one point.
