CMS' Hull crowned king of the west
Stags sophomore Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR) defeated each of the top three seeds en route to the USTA / ITA West Regional singles title. The unseeded Hull defeated third seed Moises Cardenas of Cal Lutheran in the quarters, teammate and top seed Warren Wood (Sr. Captain - Del Mar, CA) in the semis, and teammate and second seed Nik Marino (Sr. Captain - San Diego, CA) in the championship match. Hull advances to the USTA / ITA National Small College Championships in Sumter, South Carolina October 9-12 and earns ITA All-America singles honors. He becomes the fourth consecutive CMS singles player to win the West Regional, following Alex Lane in 2011, Neel Kotrappa in 2012 and Skyler Butts in 2013. A Stag singles player has won the event seven of nine times since 2006.
CMS' Wood and Marino also reached the doubles final, falling 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(2) to Pomona-Pitzer's Connor Hudson and Kalyan Chadalavada. The Stags had twelve singles players and five doubles teams in the tournament and dominated play on the final two days. In addition to the all-CMS singles final, the Stags had three of four semifinalists, and five of eight quarterfinalists. In doubles, CMS had two of their five teams reach the semifinals.
Junior Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) had a breakout performance by joining Hull as the only other unseeded quarterfinalist. Mehall earned straight set wins in each of his first three matches, including a 6-4, 6-4 victory over ninth seeded Antony Bello of Pomona-Pitzer in the second round. Mehall was stopped in the quarters by teammate Marino 6-3, 6-4. Defending ITA West Regional singles champ and fourth seeded Skyler Butts (Jr. - Santa Ana, CA) also reached the singles quarters, falling to Redlands' Patrick Lipscomb 7-6(6), 6-2.
Butts and partner Daniel Morkovine (So. - San Carlos, CA) advanced to the semifinals of the doubles, defeating second seeded Lipscomb and Gram Leahy of Redlands 8-5 in the quarters. Butts and Morkovine also lost to the eventual champs Hudon and Chadalavada. Morkovine, serving underhanded due to a shoulder injury, won two singles and three doubles matches in the tournament.
