Stags drop Caltech, can't outlast #11 Azusa Pacific
#1 CMS Stags Tennis stayed undefeated in conference play with a 9-0 win against Caltech on Saturday morning, before losing a hard fought 5-4 decision at #11 (Division II) Azusa Pacific in the afternoon. The doubleheader split leaves the Stags at 5-0 and in first place in SCIAC, and 21-2 overall.
Sophomore Max Macey (Wilton, CT) won straight set singles matches at #2 against Caltech and #6 against Azusa Pacific, earning his 19th and 20th victories of the season. Macey's 7-6(2), 7-5 win in the afternoon helped the Stags overcome a 3-1 match deficit and take the lead 4-3. However, CMS failed to convert in tough three set matches at either the #2 or #4 singles positions, as the Cougars came back to narrowly win the dual.
Other two match winners on the day were the Stags #1 doubles pair of Warren Wood (Sr. Capt. - Del Mar, CA) and Joe Dorn (Sr. - Washington D.C.) with wins in both dual matches, sophomore Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR), who won at #3 doubles and #3 singles against Caltech, sophomore Daniel Morkovine (San Carlos, CA) who won at #2 doubles against Caltech and #5 singles against APU, and junior Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA), who won at #1 singles and #2 doubles against Caltech.
Up next for CMS is a SCIAC doubleheader on Saturday, April 18 at 10:00 AM at Chapman, and then at 4:00 PM against Occidental at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
