Stags take two to start 2015

Second ranked CMS Stags Tennis won a pair of 7-2 dual matches against #31 Brandeis and #28 Bates to begin their 2015 campaign. All eleven roster players contributed to the doubleheader win on Saturday at CMS' Biszantz Family Tennis Center. Junior Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO [pictured right]) was one of five Stags to earn two or more on the day, with wins at #3 doubles against Brandeis and #6 singles against Bates.

CMS used six different doubles combinations to hold 2-1 advantages in both dual matches. The Stags have not trailed after doubles to a Division III opponent since the 2013 season. Daniel Morkovine (So. - San Carlos, CA) paired with Warren Wood (Sr. Capt - Del Mar, CA) for an 8-2 victory against Brandeis in the morning, and then each won with different partners in the afternoon against Bates. Wood reunited with Joe Dorn (Sr. - Washington, D.C.) at #1 doubles to put CMS up 1-0. Trailing 6-4, the Stags' #1 pair won the last four games for an 8-6 victory. Morkovine partnered junior Skyler Butts (Santa Ana, CA) for a dramatic 9-8(5) win at #2 doubles that put CMS up 2-1 against Bates heading into the singles.

CMS was dominant in singles in both dual matches at the #2 through #6 positions, not yielding a set loss in any of the ten matches. Sophomore Alex Brenner (San Francisco, CA) was successful in his Stag dual match debut, winning 6-2, 6-3 at the #5 spot against Brandeis. Brenner was joined by fellow sophomores and northern California natives Glenn Hull (Davis, CA) and Rohan Shankar (San Jose, CA), who also won convincingly at the #3 and #6 positions respectively against the Judges.

Against Bates, Butts bounced back from a tough morning defeat where he held four match points in the decisive match tie-break. Butts' straight set win at #2 against Bates put the Stags up 4-1. Senior Captain Nik Marino (San Diego, CA) provided the match clinching 6-2, 6-0 victory at #3, followed by a straight set win from sophomore Max Macey (Wilton, CT) at #5 singles.

Next up for the Stags is another doubleheader on Saturday, February 28 versus Division II UC San Diego at 11:30 AM and Division III Clark University at 4:00 PM. Both matches will be at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
