Wood finishes as NCAA D-III singles runner-up; first finalist from CMS since ’04

CLAREMONT, Calif. – Junior Warren Wood of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team became the first Stag since 2004 to be a finalist in the NCAA Division III Men's Singles Championships. Wood, the top-seeded singles player in the field, faced a familiar foe in No. 2 seed Joey Fritz from Amherst in the singles finals on Saturday, May 24 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

Wood and Fritz had faced off twice in 2014 prior to Saturday's championship match with each winning once, but Fritz came out on top in their third encounter, defeating Wood 6-2, 6-1 for the D-III singles national title. Fritz led through the duration of both sets en route to the win.

John Michael Cham-A-Koon was the last Stag to be an NCAA singles finalist. All told, CMS has now had a representative in the final match on nine occasions. The Stags have had four NCAA national champions in singles and five finalists. The Stags last national champion in singles came in 1993 when Ryan McKee won the title. McKee was inducted into the CMS Hall of Fame in 2009.
