Trio of Stags make it to singles quarterfinals of NCAAs
CLAREMONT, Calif. – A day after capturing a second place
finish at the NCAA Division III Team Championships and a
second-straight 30-win season, five members of the
Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's tennis team were back in action
Thursday as part of the D-III singles and doubles
championships.
The Stags had a great deal of success in singles play, as three of
its four participants made in through to Friday's quarterfinal
round of 8.
Junior Joe Dorn
also advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Wash U's John
Carswell (6-3, 7-6 (6)) and an upset win over eighth-seeded Oliver
Loutsenko of Skidmore 6-3, 6-4. Dorn next faces Wade Heerboth from
Kenyon Friday.
The third Stag to advance to the quarterfinals was Nikolas
Marino who took down fourth-seeded Michael Buxbaum of
Johns Hopkins 6-4, 6-4 in the opening round and Matt Heinrich of
Stevens 6-2, 6-2. Marino faces Colby's Carl Reid on Friday.
Sophomore Skyler
Butts lost his opening round match to second-seeded
Joey Fritz of national champion Amherst, 6-4, 6-3 .
In doubles play the Stags didn't have the same success with both
of its teams being eliminated. Dorn and Wood, the top seeded
doubles team, lost in three sets to University of Wisconsin
Whitewater's Byron Balkin and Jake Humphreys in the round of 16.
Butts and senior Neel
Kotrappa also were knocked out in the round of 16 by
Middlebury's Alex Johnston and Andrew Lebovitz.
