#1 Stags subdue #13 Sagehens 8-1

Under the lights at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center on Saturday night, #1 CMS Stags Tennis earned a tough 2-1 advantage after doubles, then swept the singles without losing a set, giving the Stags an 8-1 victory over #13 Pomona-Pitzer.

CMS' twentieth win of the season came with great resistance from its Sixth Street rival, as the Stags were two points from a 2-1 deficit in the doubles. Number two pair Skyler Butts (So. - Santa Ana, CA) and Neel Kotrappa (Sr. - La Verne, CA) needed a service break at 8-7 to force the decisive doubles match to a tie-break. Winning five of the first six points, Butts and Kotrappa held on to win the tie-break 7-4 and give CMS the 2-1 lead heading into singles.

Junior Nik Marino (San Diego, CA) was the first singles winner for the Stags at #3. Butts followed closely for his twenty-second win of the year, giving CMS a 4-1 match lead. Junior Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA) provided the clinching victory for the Stags at #1 singles, a 6-3, 6-4 effort against the Sagehens' Chris Wiechert. Completing the singles sweep for CMS were Zhenya Pereverzin (Sr. Capt. - Clackamas, OR) at #6, Daniel Morkovine (Fr. - San Carlos, CA) at #5, and Joe Dorn (Jr. Capt. - Washington D.C.) at #2. Pereverzin and Morkovine won their sixteenth matches of the year, and Dorn his fifteenth.

CMS is 20-1 overall and 6-0 in SCIAC. Next up for the Stags is a double-header on Saturday, April 12 against Occidental at 10:00 AM and Division II Point Loma Nazarene at 3:00 PM. Both matches will be at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.
