Saturday stampede

Second ranked CMS Stags Tennis defeated #23 Bates 8-1, and then opened SCIAC play with a 9-0 win at Caltech, surrendering no more than six games in any of their twelve singles matches on Saturday. CMS is now unbeaten in four matches, and 1-0 in conference play.

The Stags' trio of juniors - Joe Dorn (Washington D.C.), Warren Wood (Del Mar, CA), and Nik Marino (San Diego, CA) - earned four singles wins in the two dual matches, with Wood playing in the #2 position against Bates, and in the top spot against Caltech. CMS also showed off its depth, with convincing wins at the 4-6 positions in each match. Senior captain Zhenya Pereverzin (Clackamas, OR) got his second straight two win dual match, with one-sided decisions at #2 doubles with Marino, and at #5 singles. Sophomores Lestter Yeh (Arcadia, CA) and Bryan Mehall (Snowmass Village, CO) rebounded from tough three-set losses on Thursday night to win with ease at the #6 and #5 positions against Bates and Caltech respectively.

The Stags' freshmen also contnued to impress, as Daniel Morkovine (San Carlos, CA) won a singles and two doubles matches, while Max Macey (Wilton, CT), Glenn Hull (Brookings, OR), and Rohan Shankar (San Jose, CA) each had two victory outings.

CMS returns to action next Friday at the 125th Annual Pacific Coast Doubles tournament in La Jolla, with six doubles teams in a draw of Division I and open players. The Stags resume dual match play on Sunday at 9:00 AM against Villanova University at UC San Diego.
