Stags Open Season With Two Wins

The men's tennis team opened the 2007 season with wins over two NAIA opponents. At CMS, the Stags held on for a 5-4 victory over 23rd ranked Concordia University. The Stags got out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles, with victories from the Evan Feldhausen (SR, Tucson, AZ) and Michael Starr (FR, San Ramon) team, as well as the #1 pair of William Ellison (SR, Shaker Heights, OH) and David Oehm (SR, Menlo Park). After the doubles, CMS found itself down a set in four of six singles matches. Freshman Michael Starr was forced to retire early in the second set of his match after injuring his knee coming down from an overhead. With the match tied at 2-2, Oehm put the Stags ahead with a victory at #6. Concordia again tied the match with a win at #4, before the Stags took two of the next three matches for the win. Sophomore Guillaume Schils (Shaker Heights, OH) won the deciding match at #5 singles after rallying from a set down.

In the second match versus the University of Alberta at the Upland Tennis Club, CMS earned a 9-0 victory. Senior Jack DePaolo (Asheville, NC), freshman Eric MacColl (Greenbrae, CA), and junior Ben Hough (Spokane, WA) were impressive at #2, #4, and #6 singles, while the three CMS doubles teams lost a total of five games in three pro-sets.

The afternoon match scheduled against Hope International University was cancelled late Friday night due to a combination Hope players' injuries and ineligibility. Up next for the Stags on February 10 is the SCIAC opener at Cal Lutheran and a trip to Santa Barbara to take on Westmont College.
