Stags Swim and Dive Cruises to 214-84 Win over Caltech

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team moved to 3-0 in the SCIAC with a 214-84 win over Caltech on Saturday afternoon at Axelrood Pool.

With the win, CMS is now 3-2 on the year, with wins over Whittier, Chapman and Caltech, and the two losses coming to Division I programs UC San Diego and CSU Bakersfield on opening day. 

Frank Applebaum swept the butterfly events and added a 200 IM win, while Lucas Lang swept the distance events, Anderson Breazeale swept the backstroke, and Ethan Sattley swept the diving events. 

Sattley opened the meet with a win in the three-meter dive, breaking 300 points with a 305.85. The 200-yard medley relay team of Jeremy Tan, Spencer Merodio, Applebaum and Dylan Krueger then eked out a tight 1:32.41 to 1:32.49 win in the first swim event of the day. 

Lang earned the first of his two wins in the 1000 free, touching the wall in 9:44.03, to begin the individual events. After Simon Hu won the 200 free for Caltech, Breazeale led a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 100 back with a 51.62, just edging out Tan by .09 for first.

Applebaum took first in the 200 fly with a 1:52.73, and Krueger closed out the first half of the swimming session with a 21.14 in the 50 free. Sattley earned his second diving win of the day in the one-meter to add to the CMS lead, and Breazeale earned his second backstroke win in the 200 with a 1:55.14, just .42 ahead of Korin Aldam-Tajima and .54 ahead of Krueger.

Evan Deedy took the 200 breast in 2:09.11, just .41 ahead of Steven Tran,. before Lang finished off the distance sweep with a 4:40.67 in the 500, with Adam VanLuvanee coming in second and Cole Sumino third. Applebaum finished in 48.75 in the 100 fly, and then added a 200 IM win in 1:54.07 in the final individual race of the day. 

Breazeale, Theo Johnson, Matthew Shield and Krueger finished the meet off with a win in the 400-yard freestyle relay, clocking a 3:07.81

CMS will be back in action in three weeks, when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer in a two-day meet on Dec. 1-2.
