CMS Men's Swim and Dive Rolls to 227-64 Win over Occidental in SCIAC Opener

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team won every event as it took a 227-64 win over Occidental in its first SCIAC meet of the 2023 season.

Henrik Barck won three individual events for CMS, taking first in the 200 free, the 200 back and the 200 IM, while three other Stags picked up two wins (Lucas Lang, Evan Deedy, Tyler Headley). CMS now stands at 1-1 in dual meets on the young season, after dropping its opener at Division I UC San Diego two weeks ago.

The Stags set the tone right from the start, placing the top two teams in the 200 medley relay, just 19-hundredths of a second apart. Korin Aldam-Tajima, Evan Deedy, Tyler Headley and Theo Johnson just edged out Anderson Breazeale, Steven Tran, Jeremy Tan and Charlie Bollwerk, in a showcase of the team's depth.

Lucas Lang breezed to a win in the 1000 free in the first individual event, breaking the 10-minute barrier in 9:58.84 to win by 23 seconds. Barck took the 200 free in 1:43.20, Breazeale won the 100 back in 54.05, Deedy took the 100 breast in 58.45, and Tyler Headley won the 200 fly in 1:56.87.

The Stags then swept the two sprint freestyle events back to back, with Tan clocking a 21.69 in the 50, and Johnson earning first in the 100, taking it by just two-tenths over Josh Biggs of Occidental (47.70 to 47.90).

Barck and Deedy completed their backstroke and breaststroke sweeps respectively in the 200 back and 200 breast, respectively, with Barck finishing in 1:54.10, and Deedy finishing in 2:09.07. Lang added another sweep in the 500 free with a time of 4:43.56, and Headley earned the butterfly two-fer with a 51.89 in the 100, just edging out Tan with a 51.91.

CMS ended the meet with a win in the 400 free relay, with Breazeale, Chris Ranlett, Eric Workman and Johnson finishing in 3:10.73. The Stags added wins in both diving events, with Cyrus Gaylord taking the three-meter with 313.05 points, and Jack Griffith winning the one-meter with 300.30 points.  Both Gaylord and Griffith earned their first zone qualifying scores of the season.

CMS will be back in action on Saturday when it hosts a SCIAC tri-meet against Caltech and Chapman.
