Stags Pick Up Two Dual Wins in Tri-Meet at Chapman

ORANGE, Calif. - The No. 12 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team improved to 3-0 in SCIAC by picking up dual wins over Chapman and No. 21 Caltech in a tri-meet at Chapman on Saturday afternoon.

CMS opened its SCIAC schedule last weekend with a win over Occidental and moved to 3-0 with a pair of wins today, setting the Stags up for a big two-day dual with Pomona-Pitzer on Dec. 3-4. 

Frank Applebaum moved into the top 10 in CMS history in the 200 fly with a time of 1:50.66, winning by just under two seconds. He now places eventh all-time in Stag annals in that event. 

CMS opened with a strong showing in the 200 medley relay, as Nick Tekieli, Walter Limm, Marco Conati and Dylan Krueger finished in 1:31.05, which places sixth in CMS history. The meet ended with the 200 free relay team of Krueger, Jeremy Kim, Conati and Tekieli finishing in 1:23.40, to place ninth in CMS annals. 

Lucas Lang earned a comfortable win in the 1000 yard freestyle in the first individual event, finishing in 9:38.08 to take first by over seven seconds. After Caltech won the 200 free, Krueger led a dominant performance from CMS in the 100 back, winning in a time of 51.42, as the Stags had the top five finishers.

Limm followed with a strong effort in the 100 breast, touching the wall in 56.51 to win by over a second. After Applebaum's 200 fly win, Conati uncorked a 20.76 in the 50 free to finish first, not far off his personal best of 20.53 set in 2019.

After the intermission, Grant Stucky took first in the 200 back in 1:55.11, as the Stags again had the top five finishers. Lang picked up his second win of the day in the 500, finishing in 4:39.62, Conati added his second with a 50.77 in the 100 fly, and Applebaum won his second with a 1:56.74 in the 200 IM, just edging out teammate Chris Ranlett by .06. 

Cyrus Gaylord added a win for the Stags in the one-meter dive, picking up 307.30 points to edge Sam Solomon of Caltech (303.60) in a competitive battle. Solomon won an equally close battle in the three-meter 306.40 to 304.30, with Jack Griffith a close third with 298.55.

CMS will close out the first semester on Dec. 3-4 when it hosts Pomona-Pitzer in a big two-day meet at Axelrood Pool.
