Andreas Roesler Earns All-SCIAC in 50 Free for CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Team

COMMERCE, Calif. - Junior Andreas Roeseler earned a third-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle to earn All-SCIAC honors to highlight the second day of the SCIAC Swimming Championships for the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team.

The Stags finished the day down trailing by 48 points, as Pomona-Pitzer surged up to 464 points after the second day, while CMS stands at 416 points. Redlands is a distant third with 263 points, which give CMS the chance to set up a two-team battle on Sunday's final day if they can close the gap tomorrow.

Roeseler finished the finals of the 50 free in 20.93 seconds to come in a close second behind Anzo DeGuilio of Pomona-Pitzer (20.71) and Jack McCormick of Redlands (20.85). Roeseler had been an All-SCIAC swimmer on six different relays over his first two seasons, but earned individual accolades for the first time in his career.

In an unfortunate break for the CMS team totals, junior Marco Conati actually swam the fastest 50 free of the day with a 20.59 to win the consolation finals, but he missed qualifying out of prelims by one-hundredth of a second.

CMS also finished a close second in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team of Roeseler, junior Will Grassle, first-year Nathan Luis and Conati finished in 1:22.22 to fall just .12 behind Pomona-Pitzer. Conati swam a 19.92 split on the anchor leg to make up two-tenths of a second, but the Sagehens were able to hold on.

Senior Ben Culberson qualified for the finals in the 500 free, along with junior Kyrellos Ibrahim. Culberson earned a fifth-place finish in 4:31.89, while Ibrahim was eighth in 4:35.01, as they combined for 29 points. The Stags also had three 200 IM finalists, with senior Sam Willett earning fourth, first-year Alec Vercruysse finishing sixth, and sophomore Nick Tan taking seventh.

Day three of the SCIAC Championships will take place tomorrow with individual championships in the freestyle, breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly, and individual medley, as well as the 400 medley relay.
