CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Defeats Caltech in SCIAC Opener

PASADENA, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team won every event but one as it took a 235-61 win over Caltech in its first SCIAC meet of the 2019-20 season on Saturday afternoon at Braun Pool.

With the win, CMS now stands at 1-1 in dual meets this season, after dropping its opener at Division II powerhouse UC San Diego on Oct. 26.

The swimming portion of the day began with the 200-yard medley relay, with CMS earning the top three finishes in the event. First-year Anderson Breazeale, sophomore Walter Limm, first-year Nathan Luis and junior Will Grassle were the first-place finishers in 1:34.46.

Junior Kyrellos Ibrahim was the winner in the 1000-yard freestyle, coming in to the finish line in just under 10 minutes (9:58.52) to lead a 1-2-3 finish of Stags ahead of sophomore Michael Lee and senior Alex Moody. Breazeale followed with a win in the 200 free in 1:45.71, while senior Dave Makhervaks and Limm took the 1oo-yard backstroke and breaststroke, respectively.

The 200 fly went to Shoonhsin Li of Caltech, the only event the Beavers would win, before the Stags earned the top six finishes in the 50 free, led by junior Marco Conati.

Junior Andreas Roeseler started the second half of the meet with a win in the 100 free in 47.51, before Breazeale picked up his second individual win and third win overall (including the relay) with a victory in the 200 back in a time of 1:56.83. Senior Henry Limm took first in the 200 breast in 2:08.52, first-year Joe Zales won the 500 (4:45.23) and Luis earned the win in the 100 fly in 51.40.

CMS closed out with wins from senior Sam Willett in the 200 IM (1:58.37), and the team of Makhervaks, Luis, Conati and Roeseler in the 200 free relay (1:26.34). Senior Kendall Hollimon also swept both diving events in lopsided fashion as he continues in his pursuit of an individual national championship this year (after finishing third at nationals in the three-meter a year ago).

The Stags will return to action next weekend for their first home event of the 2019-20 season when they host Chapman and Cal Lutheran in a tri-meet, beginning at 10 a.m.
