CMS Men's Swimming and Diving Takes Two SCIAC Wins in Final Meet at Axelrood Pool

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps men's swimming and diving team hosted its final home meet of the 2018-19 season on Saturday at Axelrood Pool, and cruised to a pair of SCIAC wins, defeating Cal Lutheran 218-78 and La Verne 220-40 on Saturday afternoon.

It was also Senior Day as the Stags honored their seven seniors prior to the competition, including Jackson Crewe (back, free), John Everett (IM, butterfly), Jacob Eynon (free), John Jeang (free, back), Aaron Lutzker (IM, breast), Scott Montague (dive), Tyler Welty (breast, fly). 



Three of the seniors also earned individual wins in their final meet at Axelrood Pool. Crewe came in first place in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:44.95, Lutzker took first in the 100-yard breaststroke (57.40), edging Welty (57.73) as the two seniors went 1-2, and Everett won by a wide margin in the 200-yard butterfly (1:55.26). 

Junior Kendall Hollimon got the Stags off to a strong start by sweeping the diving events, winning the one-meter with a score of 303.75 and then taking the three-meter with a score of 338.80. Montague came in second to the returning All-American in both events in his final home meet. 

The Stags then had the top three finishes in the 200-yard medley relay, with the team of junior Dave Makhervaks, freshman Christian Simon, sophomore Marco Conati and freshman Daniel Hayon edging out the all-senior team of Jeang, Welty, Lutzker and Crewe.  After Cal Lutheran's Benjamin Brewer won the 1650, Crewe got the Stags back on track by capturing the 200 free in 1:44.95, with junior Alex Moody coming in second in 1:45.92.

Freshman Nick Tan took the 100 back in an even 53 seconds, and Lutzker followed with his narrow win over Welty in the 100 breast (freshman Walter Limm was third to make it a 1-2-3 finish for the Stags). Everett made it back-to-back senior wins for CMS with his 200 fly win, and sophomore Andreas Roeseler capped off the first half of the swim meet by winning the 50 in 21.22, edging Conati (21.37) with sophomore Will Grassle touching the wall in 21.56 to make it a 1-2-3 Stag finish. 

After the intermission, Roeseler earned his second win in a row in the 100 free in 46.56, with Simon and Makhervaks making it another CMS-CMS-CMS finish. Tan picked up his second win of the day in the 200 back, and after Cal Lutheran won the next two events (200 breast, 500 free), Conati (100 fly) and Tan (200 IM) closed out the individual portion of the competition with two more Stag wins. Crewe and Makhervaks followed Tan in the IM to add yet another 1-2-3 in the books for CMS. 

The meet closed out with the freestyle relay, with the CMS A and B teams going 1-2. The A team of Hayon, Conati, Moody and Lutzker finished in 1:26.84 ended the day with the win, with Lutzker earning the honors of touching the wall last on his Senior Day. 

CMS will be back in action next week for the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational, before taking part in the SCIAC Championships from Feb. 21-24 in Commerce, Calif. The SCIAC Diving Championships will be held on Feb. 16-17 at Pomona-Pitzer.
